AFRIMS Contributions

AFRIMS Contributions to Soldiers Facing Disease Threats
Monitoring status of old and new emerging diseases
Serving as the 'furthest outpost' of laboratory research to understand infectious diseases and test new therapies
Field testing new drugs and vaccines in actual disease environments to ensure they meet rigorous US FDA standards of registration
Serving as the 'on-the-ground' disease-threat experts to military commanders by providing diagnostic lab and policy support for the Commander-in-Chief (CINC), Pacific Command

American soldiers participating in Cobra Gold, an annual joint U.S.-Thai military exercise, Nakorn Srithammarat, Thailand. These studies help define the medical threat for allied commanders, provide limited operational support while executing approved research protocols.

The AFRIMS In Support of Cobra Gold

Cobra Gold is an annual joint U.S.-Thai military exercise of 4,000 - 7,000 participants; the largest U.S. joint operation in the world.

Provide recommendations for prevention and treatment of diarrheal diseases

Provide laboratory support of field clinics to rapidly identify changing pathogen profile (now 50% Campylobacter sp.)

Perform antibiotic sensitivity profiles on identified pathogens showing recent rise to 95% in vitro resistance of Campylobacter to first line therapy

Perform immunologic assays on cases as preparation for Campylobacter vaccine field trials

Vaccines developed and tested at the AFRIMS protect soldiers in the field, researchers in the laboratory and civilians of all nationalities.

The AFRIMS has performed extensive field testing and/or preclinical studies to validate the medical products pictured above and achieve registration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
