Facilities
The central
AFRIMS laboratory consists of four buildings: two main laboratory buildings, a
five-story administration building, and the separate newly reconstructed
veterinary medicine facility. The larger laboratory building has seven floors of
laboratories and office space for investigators, while the smaller one houses
the library and has four floors of laboratories, offices, and meeting rooms.
Additional laboratory space is available to investigators at the animal
facility.
State-of-the-art
laboratory equipment at AFRIMS includes apparatus for the newest molecular
genetic techniques such as DNA sequencing and synthesis and polymerase chain
reactions (PCR). Additional technical capabilities include high performance
liquid chromatography, flow cytometry, and cell sorting. Specialized pieces of
equipment required by several users, such as those used for scintillation
counting or computer work stations, are often shared between departments.
