Vaccine Development

AFRIMS efforts in vaccine development have benefited people worldwide. The Department of Virology field station in Kamphaeng Phet province, Thailand was established in 1981 to conduct studies of Japanese encephalitis. Successful vaccine field trials performed among 62,000 school children led to vaccine licensure by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States in 1992. A field study conducted among 40,000 school children at the same field site between 1991-1993 demonstrated the effectiveness of a vaccine against hepatitis A. FDA licensure followed in 1995.
