GEIS FY06 Projects at AFRIMS
Surveillance
| Artemesinin Resistance |
Perform in vivo /in vitro studies to determine presence and extent of artemesinin resistance along both sides of the Thai/Cambodian border. Develop host nation infrastructure to perform in vitro testing. |
| Dengue and Vector Surveillance: Philippines |
Develop local infrastructure and perform surveillance for etiology of Dengue-like illnesses in the Philippines. Perform vector surveillance in areas under study. Potential to develop site for vaccine trial. |
| Enterics |
Perform case-control studies to determine etiology and antibiotic sensitivities of diarrheal etiologies in Cambodia, Maldives, and Nepal. Plan protocol development for Laos. |
| Influenza |
Assist host nation influenza programs through training, rapid diagnostic kit provision, and reference laboratory function. Countries include Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. |
| Malaria |
Provide funding and technical support for the Royal Thai Army's malaria surveillance program in the Thai border regions. |
Infrastructure and Capacity Development
| HIV Data Warehouse |
Provide technical support to the Royal Thai Army recruit HIV screening
program. Provide reporting of results and storage of serum
samples for future investigations |
| Nepal Field Site Development |
Develop a competent, well-equipped laboratory capability in the Kingdom
of Nepal capable of performing public health laboratory surveillance
for diarrheal illnesses, febrile illnesses, influenza, JEV
and malaria. |
| Royal Thai Army Border Health Surveillance |
Provide technical support to Royal Thai Army’s syndromic
surveillance system operating on the Burmese, Cambodian, and
Laotian borders. Expand to southern provinces. |
| Veterinary Medicine |
Develop capabilities within AFRIMS Department of Veterinary Medicine to
perform laboratory surveillance for zoonotic illnesses, including
Avian Influenza. |
| Zoonotic Disease Surveillance |
Provide funding and technical support for the Thai Ministry of Public
Health and Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development’s
web-based reporting system for zoonotic diseases. |
